Good news: The Board of Aldermen is likely to pass our new zoning ordinance this spring. The current draft is a step up from our existing ordinance, and we're very supportive. But it could be better, and that's where we need your help. We've written a letter to the board, which you can read here, and we'd like you to let the Board of Aldermen know that you agree. The public comment period for the zoning ends on November 26, so please contact them now and let them know that the new zoning ordinance should have: Triple-deckers permitted everywhere in the Neighborhood Residence (NR) districts Simplified rules for building and occupying Accessory Dwelling Units (aka ADUs or in-law apartments) More height permitted in Davis Square and on Beacon Street, Washington Street, and Highland Avenue More attention to equity between East and West Somerville No floor-area-to-dwelling-unit ratio restrictions in high rises beyond what's needed for health and safety An end to the rule restricting the number of unrelated residents in a householdSend your message to [email protected] and [email protected] before November 26, and include your address so the board knows you're a Somerville resident.Thank you!
