Early October 2022
Thursday night triple-thread for housing policy
A Very Busy Thursday
Thursday, October 6 (tomorrow!) will be a busy evening for housing, and we encourage you to attend one or more of the following events:
Traffic Commission: A second meeting to discuss safety improvements on Holland Street. This has taken on renewed urgency after the August death of Stephen Conley, but is running into opposition from people concerned that parking will be less convenient. It's important to have a good showing of people in support. Virtual meeting at 5:30 pm.
Land Use/Planning Board Joint Meeting: The mayor has some proposed zoning changes to discuss with the board, but even more importantly we'll also get some updates about how the city plans to address the MBTA Communities Law, which mandates improvements to transit-oriented zoning. Virtual meeting at 6:30 pm.
Pro-Housing Social Hour: A Better Cambridge hosts a get-together at Naco Taco for people interested in housing policy. Stop by, have a taco, and learn what other people are doing to help make our communities welcoming to all. In-person at 7:00 pm.
Coming Up
Affordable housing at 24 Webster Ave:Ward 2 councilor JT Scott hosts an online community meeting about a 100% affordable housing development proposed for 24 Webster Ave, in Union Square. You can learn more about the proposal at 24Webster.org. Bonus for zoning fans: this is one of the first projects proposed under the Somerville Affordable Housing Overlay district! October 17, 6:00 pm.
299 Broadway (Old Star Market Site): Mark Development is continuing outreach to the community about progress, updates, and changes to the 299 Broadway/Star Market redevelopment project with online meetings on October 17 at 6:30 pm and October 19 at 6:00.
Abundance Through Advocacy Panel Discussion: Abundant Housing MA Board Chair Molly Goodman leads a conversation with national experts on housing, zoning, and local government. They'll be discussing housing challenges and opportunities in Massachusetts, and what role can graduate students and young professionals play in improving the situation. October 27, 6:00 pm. Networking reception to follow. In-person, 21+.
